Edifying Taxi Drivers

I went to UP for my usual Saturday French Class wearing only short pants, a white T-shirt, and white snickers. I also had a small backpack for my notes.

The taxi meter flagged at P72.50. Usually, for such, I pay either P75 or P80. Drivers here in Metro Manila do not give you loose change. Amazingly, the driver asked me to pay only P70. I said, WOW! But I asked myself why? Well, I thought it was because of my student look... and that driver was kind enough to consider to the needs of the students given the current economic crisis. How edifying!

But hey, I thought, I am more privileged... and I am sure that I have a bigger income than him. I would have wanted to add more... perhaps make it P100 or even P150. Unfortunately, the taxi left already. I thought, it was better left that way... more students will benefit from that driver.

I tell you, it was the first time a driver told me to keep loose change.

Going back home, the taxi fare was P82.50. I gave the driver P100. He returned P20 and asked if I have 2.50. I had none except for some P1.50 in P0.25 coins. "Sige na, okay na"... he said. I ended up paying P80 only... again few coins short of the taxi meter count.

Hmmm, it must have been my student attire. Well, there are still drivers out there that are kind-hearted.

Mabuhay ang Filipino!
