My Linux Saga s.1

I've joined PLUG this month ... The Philippine Linux User Group (http://www.linux.ph).

I felt that going into linux is like being invited to swim to a place called "dijo". By mere invitation, the place "dijo" must have some form of water-based swimming area... but i have no idea whether it has a lake, a waterfall, a lagoon, a river or whatever. Anyway!

I've browsed around... as advised by the PLUG members... went to wikipedia/linux, to google/linux and blogs of the former linux newbies.

One of the member's blogs lead me to the ubuntulinux screenshots page at:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/screenshots/document_view

and it showed the usual windows-based platforms. akala ko talaga parang dos-based environment na puro programming language lang ang nanduon!

I had to download a CD installer or the LiveCD... so that I can use this to have a dual booting system in my laptop.

I went to the following download areas and reached these two power pages:
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/download has lead me to:
http://mymirror.asiaosc.org/ubuntu-distro/5.10/
where i have downloaded:
<http://mymirror.asiaosc.org/ubuntu-distro/5.10/ubuntu-5.10-rc-install-amd64.iso>

http://knoppix.com/ lead me to: http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/
they look horrific to me (well, the horrible looking filenames... most with unfamiliar file extensions!)

Another pinoy Linux user also refered me to a google video which is superb but quite intimidating because of the text based installation as opposed to windows. Here's the link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6104490811311898236&q=

I saved the iso file on a cd and booted my laptop while the cd was placed in the cd rom.

NOTHING happened (hehehe!). Windows started as usual.

I tried the "run" command and selected the iso file. Windows lead me to the CD Writing software... prompting me to copy/burn the iso file.

I tried the "add/remove programs" from the control panel. it also lead me to the CD writing software.

PLUG members told me that I should burn the CD and create it as a bootable disk. I'll try it later.

Another PLUG member (based in Katipunan) has kindly offered me a free CD Installer and LiveCD which he will send via courrier. (Cheers Mate!). I will wait for that as well.

Abangan ang susunod na kabanata!

We'll yes, google and several others had been close linux-friends. Singit-singit nga lang ito kaya di ako maka-pag-research ng husto on this area. Konting tiis!
